Magnesium oxide is commonly known as bitter earth, also known as magnesium oxide. It is a typical alkaline earth metal oxide, chemical formula MgO. white powder, melting point is 2852ºC, boiling point is 3600ºC, relative density is 3.58(25ºC). Soluble in acid and ammonium salt solution. Slowly acts with water to form magnesium hydroxide. Can dissolve in carbon dioxide aqueous solution to produce magnesium bicarbonate. In the air can gradually absorb water and carbon dioxide, heating to release irritating fumes. Magnesite (MgCO3), dolomite (MgCO3-CaCO3) and seawater are the main raw materials for the production of magnesium oxide. Thermal decomposition of magnesite or dolomite yields magnesium oxide. With slaked lime treatment of seawater to get magnesium hydroxide precipitation, burning magnesium hydroxide to get magnesium oxide.
